Matthew 8:18-27

Matthew 8:18) And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side.

Matthew 8:19) Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”

Matthew 8:20) And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air [have] nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay [His] head.”

Matthew 8:21) Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”

Matthew 8:22) But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Matthew 8:23) Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him.

Matthew 8:24) And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.

Matthew 8:25) Then His disciples came to [Him] and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

Matthew 8:26) But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

Matthew 8:27) So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

Faith is a unusual thing isn’t it… it can make miracles happen, but to those who have faith without belief it destroys them.  I know that doesn’t really make sense does it, but what I’m saying is sometimes people claim to be Christian just for show and don’t really let Jesus into their hearts.  For when you proclaim out loud that you believe in Him but do not admit it in your heart, he rejects you, for God does not judge on the outward appearance but the inner.  God wants people who will follow him through the easy and the tough times, some people will turn from Him if they feel there is something better, but when the something runs out they’ll run back to him saying that they always believed in him.  “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

So you either believe in Him or you don’t, but trying to do both, be both secular and Christian will make Him turn away from you.  A little bit of true faith can move mountains, what can a lot do; restore the dead to life, make the blind see… the answer is anything that God allows us to do.  The problem with it is that many of us don’t have faith in what “He” can do, but in what “we” can do, “God has anointed me so therefore this must happen because ‘I’ will it.” God will never honor those who seek to honor themselves before him, if you wish to truly follow Him you must be prepared to turn your back on everyone near and dear to you.
