Luke 5:27-32

Luke 5:27) After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.”Luke 5:28) So he left all, rose up, and followed Him.

Luke 5:29) Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them.

Luke 5:30) And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Luke 5:31) Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

Luke 5:32) “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Now tax collectors back then were one of the worst types of Jew back then… basically it went against Israeli law for a Jew to take taxes for a foreign government like Rome… So basically they were hated and as such were the perfect material for Jesus to work with.  He could have chosen to surround himself with all sort of physically right people… but he chose those that needed his help spiritually and were basically people who were low on the social ladder, such as Tax Collectors, and Fishermen.  So who do you surround yourself with… are they true friends or are they the type who are only physically appealing while having the moral center of a dead animal… or are they the type who’ll stick by you and support you… God does not judge by the outward appearance but by the spirit… isn’t it time we do the same.
